Schöneberg
Operating every Saturday since 1990, Schöneberg’s weekly market on Winterfeldtplatz (8am-4pm, winterfeldt-markt.de, U: Nollendorfplatz or Bülowstr) is one of the city’s most popular and impressive. Over the years the market has grown from a couple of rudimentary stalls to a couple of hundred, selling meat and fish, fruit and veg, clothes and lots and lots of beautiful flowers.
You can grab a 2-euro currywurst, snack in style at the Stecklerfisch grilled fish stall or buy some specialty cheeses to take home. There is also a smaller market on the Platz on Wednesdays(8am-2pm). If you’re in the area on other days, try the food market outside the Rathaus Schöneberg (8am-4pm) which hosts a daily food market from Monday to Friday and a popular flea market at weekends (8am-4pm).
Friedrichshain
Friedrichshain’s markets take place around its historical and atmospheric Boxhagener Platz. Saturday’s food market (8am-2.30pm) has become one of the city’s most popular, a buzzy collection of fruit and veg stalls, boutique stalls selling everything from fresh, delicious bruschetta to home-made sauces and jams, as well as plenty of take-away food, including Turkish delicacies, freshly grilled fish and more.
On Sundays, a flea market sells discounted vinyl, jewellery and vintage curiosities, supplemented by a smattering of mostly second hand clothing stalls. The flea market at Boxhagener Platz offers its visitors a wide range of products like second hand stuff, bags, graphics and paintings, furniture and lamps. The distinctive feature of the flea market are its many books- and record stalls; with some patience it’s possible to discover some real treasures. International snacks and drinks make it easy to spend the whole day at the flea market. (Sunday 10am-8pm U: Frankfurter Tor).
Mitte
Central Mitte has a couple of decent markets, including an arts market between Schlossbrücke and Museumsinsel (Sat & Sun 10am-4pm, U/S: Hackescher Markt), selling books, paintings, photography and more. A second-hand flea market with around 60 stalls takes place further along the river (Sat and Sun 11am-5pm) near the Bode Museum.
For food, the bi-weekly market at Hackescher Markt (Thursdays 9am – 6pm, Saturdays 10am – 6pm) has several convenient fruit and veg stalls as well as stands selling street food (currywurst, falafels) and an assortment of leather goods, jewelry, watches and local arts and crafts.
Prenzlauer Berg
The weekly Saturday bio-market on Prenzlauer Berg’s pretty Kollwitzplatz is one of the city’s most upmarket and atmospheric. Stalls offer high quality produce – meat, fish and vegetables – from local farms, along with local manufacturers of everything from fruit juices and chocolates to honey and pasta. There are also bio-sausages and wok-fried prawns to snack on, and a few stalls selling hand-made clothes, gifts and trinkets.
A smaller version of the market takes place on Thursdays. On Sundays, head to the Mauerpark in the West of the district for one of Berlin’s most vibrant and popular flea markets; not only will you find clothes, records, antiques and more to rummage through, you’ll also find lots to eat, a neighbouring park that was once part of the former Berlin Wall, and – if the weather is fine – public karaoke in the park’s amphitheatre. If you’re not done shopping, head to nearby Arkonaplatz, where a smaller but more considered flea market hawks shoes, furniture and clothes.
Kreuzberg & Neukölln
To get – quite literally – a taste of Turkish Berlin, head to the buzzy market on the Landwehr Canal’s Maybachufer, which takes place every Tuesday and Friday (11am-6.30pm, U: Schönleinstrasse / Kottbusser Tor, www.tuerkenmarkt.de). Located on the Neukölln side of the canal – in the area known as Kreuzkölln – you’ll find everything here from first-class hummus and Turkish breads to yummy fruit juices and even clothes and textiles. Also on the Maybachufer (a little further down, every other Sunday), the Nowkölln Flea Market sells second hand wares and design objects from local and international creatives. Local vendors can also be found selling fresh produce at Kranoldplatz near Hermannstraße S Bahn station. Farmer’s market Die dicke Linda takes place here one Saturday every month from 10am-4pm. Kreuzberg also has two of the city’s four remaining 19th century Market Halls; the Marheineke Markthalle in West Kreuzberg (Marheinekeplatz, Mon-Fri 9am – 8pm, Sat 8am – 8pm, Closed Sundays, www.meine-markthalle.de) has a decent spread of international foods, from Greek to French, while the trendier Markthalle IX hosts a farmers’ market on Fridays and Saturdays, a Street Food market on Thursdays, a Breakfast Market every third Sunday of the month, and other regular food-related events.
Charlottenburg
One of the biggest and most famous flea markets in Berlin takes places on the sprawling Strasse des 17. Juni (Sat and Sun 10am-5pm, S: Tiergarten). You’ll find here second-hand antiques, vinyl, snacks and a connected arts market – prices aren’t cheap and bargains are rare but the atmosphere is great.
