Walking the streets at night with no other purpose than to see and hear what’s around throws up quite a lot of unexpected surprises; mums running around with their young children in barely-lit parks at 10pm, youths surreptitiously smoking spliffs on benches or in deserted factory yards; the lonely glow of silent supermarkets.
In a way this is the city’s real “nightlife” – the kind you don’t tend read about in lifestyle magazines.
