A cultural-historical stroll through Friedrichschain
A collection of rural areas (Boxhagen, Friedrichsberg, Stralau, Rummelsburg) until the industrial revolution got underway in the mid-nineteenth century, Friedrichschain didn’t officially come into being until the Greater Berlin Act of 1920.
This tour takes participants through almost two hundred years of history, drawing on academic research, urban planning history and personal interviews as well as literature, music, and film.
As well as profiling well-known local landmarks such as Berghain and Boxhagener Platz, we will stop off at alternative hotspot R.A.W Gelände and hidden housing estates—all while tracing the area’s distinctly rebellious past, from communist wrestlers to GDR punks.
